Man Eating Plants (Sort Of)

Today has been stormy. We had a tornado watch and a flash flood warning for most of the day. The skies are turning ominous again and I can hear thunder rolling in so it will probably storm all night. So, being that I have no new photos for today, we are going on a field trip into the photos I have stashed on the PC. Today's random photos are from our trip to Frederick Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids: http://www.meijergardens.org They are all from the carnivorous plant house. Watch out! These plants do bite :)

If you never have been to Frederick Meijers, I sure hope I have convinced you to go. They have so much more to see both indoors and outdoors.

Great photos! Do you know what medium they used to grow Pitcher plants? I read somewhere that sphagnum moss is best but the label on my tube of baby pitcher plants say to plant them in soil.

I am not sure what they used but when I looked at the sites I used to ID most of my photos, they said this:

A good soil mix for most carnivorous plants is a 50:50 sand and peat mix. For Nepenthes (pitcher plants), consider a 50:50 long fiber or milled Sphagnum and perlite mix, and if you don't have Sphagnum (oh dear), then maybe you can get by with a 5:2 peat and perlite mix, although I don't think I'd like to try it.

Hi Jessica, Thanks for stopping by my blog for the Meijer post. These are just really cool plants and I love your photos. I've always been fascinated by carnivorous plants... not just because they eat insects (which is really cool in and of itself), but because their shapes and colors are so intriguing and unusual. BTW, I got a friend request from a JessicaAFM in Flickr. If that's you, will you please leave a short comment over on my blog and let me know? Then I'll add you!
